Merlin and the Lady of the Lake
The magical magician who could create kings captured my imagination as a youth. From Disney's The Sword in the Stone where a wizard could shape shift, fly, and create the future, to Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave the tales of power, glory and the greater goal for the betterment of humanity, Merlin was the man of magic and mystery.
A wizard frequently is known as a man with either two fathers or one without one. Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae of c.1138 writes that Vortigern, the mid-fifth century British king, is having foundation problems with his fortress. Consulting his sages, he is instructed to sprinkle the blood of a fatherless youth onto the stones.
Merllin's mother was daughter of the king of Dyfed , who while at the nunnery had been impregnated by an incubus demon. Consequently, her son Merlin was considered fatherless and brought to be sacrificed. However, having prophetic powers Merlin instead told tales of dragons and kings. He instructed the men on the proper construction of the foundation and lived.
Merlin, the man who brought a magically disquised Ambrosius to Tintangle, to impregnate the Lady Igraine. Tales of sorcery, impersonation and the position of the stars so that the futher king Arthur might be born. The BEAR constellation is associated with King Arthur.
Merlin, the vizier to the future king, a being who could see the future and set the royal course of event. Merlin who sleeps today in the tree where he was bound by the sorceroress Nimue.
